Joomla Vs. Wordpress

This is in response to an article at JoomlaShack: 5 reasons you should use Joomla instead of Wordpress

I had this discussion with my business partner the other day. She's a Wordpress junkie, I have more experience with Joomla.

They both have MySQL and a filesystem for storing media files, so you really can't say one is more of a CMS than the other. Wordpress is written well enough that while it was designed to be a blogging platform it has successfully morphed into a CMS-ish application. I think which one to choose depends on who you are creating the site for. If you're building a site for yourself, use whatever feels comfortable. If it's for a customer, who maybe is a little intimidated by computers and the whole web thing, then the real difference it seems to me is in the usability of the backend, and I'm afraid Wordpress wins it there. If the average user can't navigate their site and maintain it, then it's of limited or no value to them. Joomla is a little clunky as far as adding media files, while Wordpress let's you upload them as you write your content, which is when most people remember to do it. Friendly URLs are available in both, but are much less painful in Wordpress. The Wordpress tagging system is a lot more flexible than Joomla's rigid section/category hierarchy. Joomla's plugin system is better, at least from a user's point of view. Average users are not comfortable unzipping archives in Wordpress' plugins directory. It's true that using multiple templates is easier in Joomla, as is running multiple sites off of one install. Still, I think usability for an average site owner is the most important criteria, so I would say that if you can get away with using Wordpress then you should. If you need a slightly beefier site then probably go with Joomla. If you need something more custom than that, build it in a web framework like Django,Rails, or Zope.
